Are the Old Testament Prophecies
Yet to be Fulfilled?

by George Ebejer, Malta

"God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world." --Hebrews 1:1, 2

In Old Testament times God spoke by the prophets but now He speaks to us by His Son. We believe in the Old Testament because it is God's Word (2 Tim. 3:16-17). But we are under Christ and not the Prophets.

When someone tells me about some prophecies of Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, or any other Old Testament prophet that are yet to be fulfilled I tell them I do not listen to Isaiah or Daniel or any of the Old Testament prophets, just tell me what Christ says.

Today God speaks to me by His Son and not by Isaiah or Daniel, etc. I believe that the Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled.

We're not waiting for something/someone else to fulfill what the Old Testament said. They were fulfilled. For example:

  1. The prophecies concerning our Lord have all been fulfilled.
    1. The birth of our Lord was a fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy (Matthew 1:21-23).
    2. His being taken to Egypt to escape Herod was a fulfillment of prophecy also (Matthew 2:15), as was the slaughter that Herod instigated (Matthew 2:17-18).
    3. The city in which he was raised was a fulfillment of prophecy (Matthew 2:23).
    4. When Jesus preached in the places He did, this fulfilled Old Testament prophecy (Matthew 4:13-16).
    5. When Christ healed the sick, this fulfilled another prophecy of Isaiah (Matthew 8:16-17, also: 12:15-21).
    6. Christ speaking in parables, and the people's response fulfilled prophecy also (Matthew 13:13-15, 34-35).
    7. The way Christ entered Jerusalem for the last time fulfilled Zechariah's (9:9) prophecy (Matthew 21:1-5).
    8. Those prophecies concerning one coming to die for men and to suffer, and resurrect the third day were fulfilled in Christ (Matthew 16:21; Luke 18:31-33).
    9. He declared all the prophecies concerning Him had been fulfilled (Luke 24:25-27, 44-45)
    10. At His death, He declared, "It is finished" (John 19:30). All that was set for Him to do had been done (John 17:4). He fulfilled all the Old Testament prophecies concerning Him.

  2. The prophecies concerning Israel have been fulfilled as well.
    1. God made three promises to Israel. A land promise (Genesis 17:8), a seed promise (Genesis 12:7, 15:5, 17:7), and a nation promise (Genesis 12:2-3, 17:5-6).
    2. Land promise fulfilled: Deuteronomy 19:8-10; Joshua 23:15-16; Nehemiah 9:7-8; Joshua 21:43-45
    3. Seed promise fulfilled: Galatians 3:16
    4. Nation promise fulfilled: Exodus 33:13; Deuteronomy 4:6-8; II Samuel 7:23
    5. Therefore, God has already fulfilled His promises to Abraham. (Josh. 23:14)

  3. The prophecies concerning the New Name have been fulfilled.
    1. Isaiah 56:5, 62:2: 65:15
    2. Fulfilled: Acts 11:26

  4. The prophecies concerning the kingdom have been fulfilled.
    1. II Samuel 7:12-17 – Acts 2:30-35 (Christ is reigning now)
    2. Daniel 2:44; Mark 14-15. 9:1 – Acts 2:1-4; Colossians 1:13; Revelation 1:9 (Kingdom spoken of as in existence)

Therefore, what is left?

We need to respect the Bible, and such things as the recording of fulfilled prophecies prove the truth of the Scriptures beyond a doubt.

The Bible is inspired of God (II Timothy 3:16-17).
