He Showed Up On Sunday
A new book documenting the life of Walter Payton reveals that “Sweetness” his nickname, led a life off the field that was anything but, sweet. Listening to the radio the other day, a commentator, responding to the allegations in the books said, “Yeah, but he showed up on Sundays.”
In an old commercial, tennis star, Andre Agassi, proclaimed, “Image is everything.” Sadly, many people live by that mantra. But, as Christians, we are challenged to reshape our lives into the image of Christ (Col. 3:10)
True disciples will show up on Sunday; but it will be more than a show. It will be a reflection of a life truly dedicated to God. It will be a sign of a transformed and transforming life (Ro. 12:1-2).
A Bible in your hand on Sunday, ought to be a reflection of God’s Word hidden in your heart (Psa. 119:11) through daily study and meditation (Psa. 1:2). Your “amen” to the prayers and the preaching should reflect your desire to see God’s will done in your life (Luke. 22:42). The songs of praise that flow from your lips ought to come from a heart overflowing with praise and devotion (Psa. 139:14). Your presence on Sunday, should reflect your desire to grow in knowledge, faith and zeal so that you will be better equipped to head out into the world to do God’s will (Luke 6:42) and be a bright and shining light in the midst of darkness (Phi. 2:14-16; 1 Pet. 2:9-12).
Meeting together as God’s people isn’t optional (Heb. 10:25). However, it’s not even close to the only thing that matters. Let’s do more than “show up.” Let’s live for Jesus.
